Iyengar yoga is a dynamic form of Hatha yoga, as developed and taught by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar.

The subject is taught according to a clear framework, and teachers are trained according to BKS Iyengar’s guidelines.

Students develop their understanding of yoga experientially. The combination of structured teaching and experiential learning enables students to use the discipline of yoga to support and develop their lives.

Emphasis is given to postural alignment in the asanas (poses). Students develop strength coupled with flexibility, and learn how move mindfully.

Iyengar yoga is an active and creative practice which allows students to develop their physical and mental capacities, whilst respecting their limits.

Regular practice of Iyengar yoga strengthens the mind and body. Over time practice reduces nervousness, fear and anger. It builds the mental and emotional stability needed for positive change and self development.

Iyengar yoga is known for its emphasis on timing, props and sequencing. These techniques allow yoga practice to be approached flexibly according to the needs of individual students at different times of their lives.

Timing
Students are taught to stay for a longer duration of time in asanas to achieve different effects.

Props
The use of props such as belts, ropes and chairs allows beginner students to achieve correct alignment in the asanas. Students can then learn to perform the asanas with the same precision without the props.

Sequencing
Students are taught how to sequence different groups of asanas. Students develop their understanding of how the effects of asanas change according to the sequence in which the asana is placed.

Books

Light on Yoga
Light on Life: The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom [BARGAIN PRICE] (Hardcover)
by B.K.S. Iyengar (Author), John J. Evans (Author), Douglas Abrams (Author)

From Publishers Weekly
Master yogi Iyengar offers what may turn out to be his last written words on the discipline that he helped popularize with Light on Yoga. Published in 1966, that first book became yoga’s “bible” and set the standard for yoga books, providing pictures and instructions. The 86-year-old teacher here expounds the philosophy of yoga—its metaphysics, of which yoga poses, or asanas, represent the physical component. Iyengar yoga is vigorous because it involves the body, mind and spirit, and the master explains those interrelationships clearly. Chapters elaborate on aspects of yoga—the physical, energetic, mental, intellectual and divine, showing the architecture of the comprehensive system of spiritual teachings that lead to samadhi, the state of blissful absorption. Yoga is about health and purity, flexibility and divinity. While this book underlines the intellectual aspect of yoga, it is insufficient for a new yoga student, no substitute for yoga sadhana, practice that requires and integrates body and mind. Not the book with which to begin the yoga journey, it is highly recommended for those advanced on the path and interested in learning from a master of flexibility and wisdom. (Oct.)

What level of instruction is right for me?
 How much do classes cost?
How do I enrol?

I’m not very flexible - can I still do yoga?
Yes you can!
You will become flexible in time as you practice. Yoga is for everyone, not just the flexible.

What should I wear?
Wear clothes you can move or breathe in. T-shirts, shorts and footless tights are suitable. If possible wear clothes that reveal your ankle and knee joints so that we can see your alignment.

Do I need to bring any equipment?
We provide all equipment. If you want your own mat for use in classes and at home, please talk to your teacher.

Eating and Drinking?
Yoga is best done on an empty stomach. Don’t have a major meal for at least 3 hours before class. Don’t drink water during the class. Avoid alcohol before class.

Where is Yogatrack?
Yogatrack is in the Addison Road Centre, 142 Addison Road Marrickville. You can zoom and drag this map.

The 428 bus stops at the front gate. Petersham and Stanmore railway stations are each a 10 minute walk away. There also plenty of free parking right outside Yogatrack.

How frequently should I attend?
We recommend two classes a week. Yoga practice involves developing body memory as well as intellectual understanding. This requires regular practice. We encourage people to practice at home between classes.

We have structured our payment system to make monthly enrolled attendance cheaper than casual attendance. We encourage you to come regularly so that your practice and understanding of yoga can develop steadily. Our teachers plan their classes around specific students and groups of students. This allows us to match our teaching to your needs. This makes classes more satisfying for students and teachers.

What if I miss a class?
If you have to miss your enrolled class, please let your teacher know beforehand, and we can arrange a make up class for you during the calendar month. If you are going away we can arrange a pro rata payment for you so that you keep your place in the class. Classes cannot be carried to the next calendar month and are not transferable.

What if I have a health problem?
Please let your teacher know if you have any health issues, or are under unusual stress. This allows us to tailor the poses and sequences to your needs. If you have a physical or a mental disability, please make time to talk to us before commencing classes.

For Women
Please let us know before the class if you are pregnant or menstruating. Some poses are not recommended at these times. Other poses will be more beneficial.

More information
Please contact Yogatrack if you have further questions.
